"The Ashby De La Zouch & District Agricultural Society Scholarship is a great opportunity for enthusiastic young entrants that is studying an agriculture-related course and is within 25 miles of Ashby De La Zouch. The award aims to encourage individuals to excel within the agricultural industry and their studies with the initial help of funding and encouragement. This award has helped myself substantially with developing my knowledge and networking within the industry. I thank all the trustees within the show and look forward to becoming more involved with Ashby Show in the years to come."
Why did you apply?
"I applied for the Scholarship, as a final year student of Harper Adams University, as I believe these funds would help benefit me to pursue my passion for agriculture and food production. The application process was very informal and was great to meet the trustees of the scholarship who made applicants feel very at ease during the interview process. "
What have you done with the money?
"The funds I received for this award has assisted myself to improve my knowledge of business awareness, increase my practical skills and further develop my network.
Since receiving this award, I have finished my placement year with Mcdonalds/ The Lakes Free Range Egg Company, and I have been lucky to have attended the Oxford Farming Conference 2023 and Dairy Tech at Stoneleigh Park this year. It has been great to hear from industry leading experts about the latest innovation and services addressing key challenges and opportunities affecting the industry. Moreover, attending these events has informed myself about new technologies and product launches within the agricultural industry, that drives change to transform food and farming systems for good.
Additionally, with being in my final year at Harper Adams studying Agriculture with Animal Science has allowed myself to become familiar of current situations/future trends and expand my knowledge within the industry to then have applied these concepts into my studies."
Why did I apply?
I am a graduate student and always wanted to go on to study Veterinary Medicine after my undergraduate degree. However, as a graduate I was unable to apply for tuition fee’s, while not able to work in the summer as much due to our course placements we must carry out. When I saw this Ashby Show scholarship, I applied straight away as the large amount of money really helps!
What have I done with the money?
As mentioned above I have used some of it for student fee’s, however I have also bought an academic book. It is specifically on farm animal disease, an area of veterinary that I want to specialise in whilst also supporting my current studies it will also be essential in my career.
We are also required by the RCVS to carry out a number of weeks placement in practice. I have taken the opportunity to travel around the country to Cornwall right up to Scotland. The scholarship funding also helped to pay for accommodation and food while I was away. I find it really interesting seeing how farms work differently and picking up maybe only small changes can make a big difference to animal health and production.
I can’t thank The Ashby De La Zouch & District Agricultural Society enough for awarding me the scholarship. Many thanks to the chairman and committee who interviewed me and presented me the award at Ashby show last year.
